Redmine on Raspberry pi : it really works ( surprisingly ) !

When I managed to buy a Raspberry Pi a few months ago, I was unsure about the way I would use it : not enough for a test server, too much for embedded stuff …

Anyway, I bought it, installed Debian on it, and it was lying around for a long time, until yesterday.

Luckily for it, I chose Redmine over Jira !

Installing redmine wasn’t a big deal as raspbian repos contained everything I needed : redmine and redmine-mysql .

sudo apt-get install redmine redmine-mysql

I already had an apache server setup on my pi, I only had to install and enable mod-passenger and configure one or two things:

  • VirtualHosts
    RailsEnv production
    RailsBaseURI /redmine
  • Link to redmine in /var/www
    ln -s /usr/share/redmine/public /var/www/redmine
  • .htaccess in /usr/share/redmine/public
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

Launched my favorite web browser, and … it takes a VERY LONG TIME …
Fortunately, this is only when you restart apache ! After the first launch, everything seems fine !
I probably need to test it in real life conditions : multiple users, multiple projects ( I already have 3 projects set up on it and it works fine), multiple modules, etc…
So the final word is : if you don’t know what to do with your raspberry pi, install redmine, it’s okay !
